Personal tutors

A named student talking to a named human, or to a course- or campus-owned agent that behaves like a tutor, advisor, or growth companion.

8 institutions · 4 jurisdictions

At most of the universities listed here, faculty have a new 1:1 job: they author the tutor (outcomes, allowed sources, Socratic vs directive). Students still get a human. Instructors then read conversation logs for misconceptions.

Advising is a different lane. The bot takes hours, requirements, deadlines, and nudges. The human takes judgement, exceptions, and first-generation pathing.

The East Asian analog is a persistent growth assistant for a whole cohort, with centre staff and volunteer TAs as knowledge donors rather than 24/7 first response.

UK-style personal-tutor systems (fixed meetings plus a digital record) have not, on public evidence, attached an owned agent to that role.

Jill Watson is the 2016 original virtual TA: 24/7 Q&A on approved courseware, late-night problem scaffolding, an office-hours substitute. The GPT-era version ran in several GT classes (about 1,300 students) plus two Technical College System of Georgia colleges.

New in 2026: expansion to more courses, and SMART Tutor in ECE 2040 (50-student optional pilot, grounded only in course materials). Machine, academic. No institutional pastoral bot found. Human TAs remain; the bot takes the midnight queue.

Two 1:1 products on one owned platform, Maizey. LSA advising chat for about 19,000 students (degree requirements, pre-health/pre-law, student success). Engineering’s 24/7 advisor for first-year and undeclared engineers. Canvas-native course tutors that faculty can stand up on lecture-capture transcripts.

Machine front door; human advisors keep complex cases.

Cogniti is an educator-authored agent platform used as Socratic tutors, 24/7 course Q&A, and formative coaches. More than 800 Sydney educators as of June 2025; about 100 institutions testing or using it. On Microsoft Marketplace from 2026.

Danny Liu’s framing: the teacher is the actor, Cogniti the stunt double — it does what the human cannot physically do (be with every student at 2am).

Project NALA is NTU-owned, educator-built course tutors (Socratic, stepwise, course-grounded), coordinated by ATLAS. Piloted across nine NTU schools (the official scale claim; NTU has not published a 2025–26 student-headcount). Faculty dashboards log where students stall.

Machine, academic. No NTU pastoral 1:1 bot found on the public NALA pages.

UT Sage is a homegrown AI tutor platform: faculty create Socratic tutor-bots on course materials; students use them as 1:1 coaches. Canvas-integrated. Available to all faculty, staff, and students with a UT EID from fall 2025. AWS-hosted, Anthropic models; student records not used to train third-party models.

No pastoral Sage. UT has not published a public count of live tutors.

This is the US advising redesign. GPS Advising prompts human 1:1 meetings from risk alerts (official page: 800 risk factors, more than 40,000 students tracked daily). Pounce, the owned chatbot (2016–), takes enrolment, FAFSA, deadlines, nudges; humans take the rest. Original summer-melt trial: 19% to 9%.

TEACH ME (US Education Department, 2024–27) extends course chatbots into first-year math and English at GSU and partner campuses.

Illinois Chat is the campus-official build-your-own 24/7 teaching assistant. Faculty upload course material and share it; optional Canvas/LTI. Official campus service from fall 2025 (CIO + Illinois Computes). ECE 408 has used it since a fall 2023 prototype: more than 22,000 student questions over four semesters.

That is the published course count.
